Managing Risk with Team Deakins | DePaul VAS
James and Roger Deakins talk about the fine line of handling risk during shoots.
Moderated by Dana Kupper.
Roger A. Deakins was born and raised in Devon. He studied Graphic Design at the Bath College of Art and before continuing on to the National Film School, he spent time shooting still photographs for North Devon, with the intent of capturing the disappearing rural farm life. After graduating from the National Film School, he shot a number of documentaries and then moved into feature films. Roger has been nominated 16 times for an Academy Award and won twice for the movies BLADERUNNER 2049 and 1917. He has also been nominated 17 times for the top award of the American Society of Cinematographers, 11 times for the BAFTA award and 11 times for the British Society of Cinematographers. He has been awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Society of Cinematographers, the British Society of Cinematographers and the National Board of Review. He is also the only cinematographer to have been awarded the honour of CBE in 2013 as well as receiving the honour of knighthood in 2021. Roger also enjoys being a visual consultant on certain animated films. He has consulted on WALL•E, RANGO, all of the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON films and VIVO, to name a few. Among his list of films are: SID AND NANCY, MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON, BARTON FINK, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, FARGO, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, SKYFALL, BLADERUNER 2049, 1917, THE GOLDFINCH, PRISONERS, TRUE GRIT, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?, UNBROKEN, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, SICARIO, KUNDUN, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, JARHEAD, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE, and EMPIRE OF LIGHT.
James Ellis Deakins is the creative work partner of Roger Deakins. Born on the east coast of the United States, she double majored in college in Latin and Greek, doing a graduate course in Latin as an undergraduate. Once out of school, she began her film work in New York City as a film lab technician at DuArt Film Laboratories and then a script supervisor in production. After moving to Los Angeles, she met Roger Deakins on a film set and their creative collaboration began. Eventually relinquishing the role of script supervisor to more fully enter into their collaborative partnership, she and Roger developed their unique working style which has continued to evolve as they enter into new enterprises, including a podcast (“Team Deakins”), a website and a book of still photography. James’ natural affinity with technology proved essential when productions moved from the use of film capture to digital. Team Deakins create their approach and plan to a film together. James oversees the many details that need to be coordinated which allows Roger to focus on capturing the visual. Working together, James and Roger have strived to create memorable images as well as share their knowledge with others.

    I'm about three years older than bo, and have a 14 year old daughter and I totally agree with him about the way we grew up WITH the internet versus IN the internet. I'm honestly so annoyed with the audience laughing at the serious things he is saying, it's irritating even when he's literally crying. I can't believe he made another "special" after this being funny and singing songs at ALL the devolved into horror and dread. And broke up with his gf who was way older than him and he's been with since he was a teenager. Bizarre. 😊

    there were three EM's in my opinion. Wish someone would have asked.. Two we see, one we don't see but we can safely assume another EM was the one who broke the windshield when the house was confused about why because there was nothing in the car to take. It appears that EM wanted to do the same thing the main character EM did at the end.. What stopped her was the other world Kevin bumping into her by the car.

    Pertaining to 19:13 as to Folger personae asserting "there was no authorship question": the correct response would have been to say that hey, great, WE AGREE there's no question! Edward de Vere was the author - it's settled. There ISN'T any authorship question.

  • @johnbeattie5014
    @johnbeattie5014 11 місяців тому

    Pertaining to 16:31 as to the search for a "smoking gun": Oxfordians *already have* a "smoking gun", if we will merely bring it to the forefront of all discussions about the Shakespeare Authorship Revelation. It's from Comedy Of Errors, where servant Dromio of Ephesus says, out of nowhere, “I buy a thousand pound a year, I buy a rope.” IV.1. This is mysterious, no? The “thousand pound a year” has nothing to do with the plot at hand, no? Scholars have long puzzled over this, believing it was some kind of transient reference which Elizabethan theatregoers would have understood but which is now lost in the mists of time. But IMHO (and some Oxfordian scholars have pointed out the possibility that) this was Oxford's referring to his annuity which the normally parsimonious Queen Elizabeth began paying him in June 1586. Can we surmise that, knowing his name could never attach to his writings, Oxford inserted this "thousand pound" clue for future researchers to discover as a link to himself, the true author? Francis Bacon or Christopher Marlowe or other authorship candidates never received any "thousand pound a year", did they? And certainly the Stratford man never did!

    Lisa and Laura and Aaron: for 8:55-9:20 could you describe here in the Comments what the audience's reaction was? Had most heard, or not heard, about the Shakespeare Authorship Revelation? And were most aware, or not aware, of this being "controversial"? In watching the video at 8:55-9:20 we cannot tell how many in the audience were raising, or not raising, their hands.

    Great, I remember meeting Mark in Babelsberg Studios 1995. He visited our small effects studio and I showed him my Amiga Lightwave stuff we did at that time. He was so cool and funny and he told me that he used the Amiga and Lightwave himself for the first tests of Dino animations for Jurassic Park. I didn't know who he was when I met him, but I was so impressed when i read about him later and i saw all the productions he did from Abyss, Terminator and Jurassic Park. He is one of the real pioneers and he shaped the industry.

    I've had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with the genius that is Yuri Norsteyn on three occasions in recent times, the last being in the Moscow Book Fair in June 2023. We've signed and dedicated copies of our books to each other, and he will freely give his time to anyone interested in his unique works of art. Like me, he prefers to shun modern devices, prefering instead to stick to various nib thickness ink pens and different grades of pencils to jot down his ideas and notes 🤗

    Bo's passion for the psych and sociology behind social media is amazing and so rare. Im autistic, so ive been seeing patterns and trends for years regarding these things. It is absolutely heartbreak thinking of kids now on the internet. Without the internet we had more than enough pressure and suffering. Now that is widespread. Parents post their babies from BIRTH, their toddlers eating ice cream (with 7m saves by pedos), their kids in bikinis, on the toilet, everywhere. Then the kids grow up and post themselves, following the trend, copying celebrities. Damaging their mental health more and more. Opening themselves up to predators because NO adult is stepping in. The falsity of the social side, the self image side are bad enough, without the millions of predators hopping on there too. Dont even get me started on porn and how literal children are exposed to the most violent obscure bizzare sex acts before they've hit puberty. Thats horrific. The internet is like one big grooming machine. 'show your body' 'show what you eat' 'everyones watching you' 'heres porn' 'heres a predator' Its insane.

    My thought: (Spoiler alert!) Emily with jacket and Emily without are the two that co-exist at the end. Both of them drugged the two Emilys. The first one that took the jacket doesn't have a ring. Look at Emily's right hand when she was thrown at the trunk (the ring she wore was gone). When they watched the comet, Emily was gone. No one can notice her inside the house. The second Emily took that chance to attack another Emily (who presumably went to that house too given she doesn't look horrified anymore when other Emily attacked her. She seems to know what was going on unlike the real Emily to that house that is oblivious to different realities). When she passed out, maybe the other Emily with jacket decided to hide since she has everyone's attention and you know what will happen if they were seen at the same time. Emily with jacket is the only logical person that can call Kevin that morning because she knew where the real Emily's phone is or even has it after she took her things.

    Lots of interesting infos in this interview, unfortunately nobody asked why the sweater / no sweater cut :( Trunk Emliy having the phone i think is simply a call back to Schrodinger's box, trunk Emily both has no phone, and has a phone, the inside of the trunk is still decoherent I think the bathroom was too up until Kevin opened it and this is why the only thing he found is the ring If they opened the trunk before the call, trunk Emily and the phone probably would have disappeared too I was already pretty sure we always followed the same Em who arrived at the "wrong house" from the very beginning, but i still can't figure out why she is missing the sweater right after the last power cut I've watched this movie dozens of times in a few years, but i think i'm just not smart enough to grasp that last clue
